Orchids are a diverse and widespread group of flowering plants with colourful and fragrant blooms. They belong to the family Orchidaceae. Many species of orchids are epiphytes, living on trees. They attract insect pollinators by colour, pattern, scent, pheromones, and sometimes by mimicking female insects. Orchids have tiny seeds; they rely on fungal partners for germination. Some orchids have no leaves; they either photosynthesise with their roots or rely entirely on fungal partners for food.
