The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat, Oman, is the second largest in the world. It reflects both Omani and Islamic architectural styles. Construction lasted from 1994 through 2000. The Mosque was inaugurated on May 4, 2001, to celebrate 30 years of the reign of Sultan Qaboos bin Said. The main prayer hall can hold over 6,500 worshippers, and the women’s prayer hall can accommodate 750 worshippers at a time.

Non-Muslims are allowed to visit the Mosque and appreciate the spectacular architecture and decoration, every day except Friday. Women are expected to follow a strict dress code. The mosque is surrounded by beautiful and well-maintained gardens.

Three of the Mosque’s five minarets are visible in this photograph.
The doors on the right side open into the women’s prayer hall, with space for 750 women to pray together.

When constructed, the central chandelier was the world’s largest chandelier.

This chandelier, located in the centre of the men’s prayer hall, measures 14 meters and weighs 8,500 kilograms. It holds around six hundred thousand shining bright Swarovski crystals, with 24-carat gold plating, which took more than four years to complete.
