The Little grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis) is also known as Dabchick. Tachybaptus is derived from ancient Greek “Takhus,” meaning fast and “Bapto,” meaning to sink under. Ruficollis is derived from the Latin word “Rufus,” meaning red, and “Collum” meaning neck. The Little Grebe is a small, dumpy grebe which appears to have a ‘fluffy’ rear end. It dives at the slightest sign of danger and can remain submerged for up to 30 seconds when threatened.
