In an era when a top bureaucrat complained-

“Tough reforms are very difficult in the Indian context, we have too much of democracy…”, on India’s first Prime Minister, Jawahar Lal Nehru’s 61st death anniversary, I was reminded of Albert Einstein’s quote about Mahatma Gandhi-

“Generations to come, it may well be, will scarce believe that such a man as this one ever in flesh and blood walked upon this Earth”.

Gandhiji won’t mind my using a quote for him being used for his favourite disciple.

Nehru had the rare quality of commanding respect from his opponents. I will quote his “adversaries” to throw light on his greatness. If not adversaries, they were definitely not his followers.

Netaji Subash Chandra Bose named one of the regiments of the Azad Hind Fauj after Nehru. Kaifi Azmi, the prominent progressive poet, was a member of the Communist Party of India (CPI). In the song “Meri Aawaz Suno” from the movie “Naunihal”, poignantly sung by Mohammad Rafi, Kaifi Azmi expressed loss and the enduring impact of the leader loved dearly by his people. The song has the actual video footage of Nehruji’s funeral.

Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who belonged to a very different ideology, praised Nehru lavishly on his death. He even likened  Nehru to Rama. Vajpayee was a Rajya Sabha member at that time. He was extremely critical of the Nehru government’s policies, yet he respected Nehru.

Sir,

a dream has been shattered, a song silenced, a flame has vanished in the infinite. It was the dream of a world without fear and without hunger, it was the song of an epic that had the echo of the Gita and the fragrance of the rose. It was the flame of a lamp that burnt all night, fought with every darkness, showed us the way, and one morning attained Nirvana.

Death is certain, the body is ephemeral. The golden body that yesterday we consigned to the funeral pyre of sandalwood was bound to end. But did death have to come so stealthily? When friends were asleep and guards were slack, we were robbed of a priceless gift of life.

Bharat Mata is stricken with grief today — she has lost her favourite prince. Humanity is sad today — it has lost its devotee. Peace is restless today — its protector is no more. The downtrodden have lost their refuge. The common man has lost the light in his eyes. The curtain has come down. The leading actor on the stage of the world displayed his final role and taken the bow.

In the Ramayana, Maharashi Valmiki has said of Lord Rama that he brought the impossible together. In Panditji’s life, we see a glimpse of what the great poet said. He was a devotee of peace and yet the harbinger of revolution, he was a devotee of non-violence but advocated every weapon to defend freedom and honour.

He was an advocate of individual freedom and yet was committed to bringing about economic equality. He was never afraid of a compromise with anybody, but he never compromised with anyone out of fear. His policy towards Pakistan and China was a symbol of this unique blend. It had generosity as well as firmness. It is unfortunate that this generosity was mistaken for weakness, while some people looked upon his firmness as obstinacy.

I remember I once saw him very angry during the days of the Chinese aggression when our Western friends were trying to prevail upon us to arrive at some compromise with Pakistan on Kashmir. When he was told we would have to fight on two fronts if there was no compromise on the Kashmir problem, he flared up and said we would fight on both fronts if necessary. He was against negotiating under any pressure.

Sir, the freedom of which he was the general and protector is today in danger. We have to protect it with all our might. The national unity and integrity of which he was the apostle is also in danger today. We have to preserve it at any cost. The Indian democracy he established, and of which he made a success is also faced with a doubtful future. With our unity, discipline and selfconfidence we have to make this democracy a success.

The leader is gone, the followers remain. The sun has set, now we have to find our way by the light of the stars. This is a highly testing time. If we all could dedicate ourselves to the great ideal of a mighty and prosperous India that could make an honourable contribution to world peace for ever, it would indeed be a true tribute to him.

The loss to Parliament is irreparable. Such a resident may never grace Teen Murti again. That vibrant personality, that attitude of taking even the opposition along, that refined gentlemanliness, that greatness we may not again see in the near future. In spite of a difference of opinion we have nothing but respect for his great ideals, his integrity, his love for the country and his indomitable courage. With these words, I pay my humble homage to that great soul.

अध्यक्ष महोदय,

एक सपना था जो अधूरा रह गया, एक गीत था जो गूँगा हो गया, एक लौ थी जो अनन्त में विलीन हो गई। सपना था एक ऐसे संसार का जो भय और भूख से रहित होगा, गीत था एक ऐसे महाकाव्य का जिसमें गीता की गूँज और गुलाब की गंध थी। लौ थी एक ऐसे दीपक की जो रात भर जलता रहा, हर अँधेरे से लड़ता रहा और हमें रास्ता दिखाकर, एक प्रभात में निर्वाण को प्राप्त हो गया।

मृत्यु ध्रुव है, शरीर नश्वर है। कल कंचन की जिस काया को हम चंदन की चिता पर चढ़ा कर आए, उसका नाश निश्चित था। लेकिन क्या यह ज़रूरी था कि मौत इतनी चोरी छिपे आती? जब संगी-साथी सोए पड़े थे, जब पहरेदार बेखबर थे, हमारे जीवन की एक अमूल्य निधि लुट गई। भारत माता आज शोकमग्ना है – उसका सबसे लाड़ला राजकुमार खो गया। मानवता आज खिन्नमना है – उसका पुजारी सो गया। शांति आज अशांत है – उसका रक्षक चला गया। दलितों का सहारा छूट गया। जन जन की आँख का तारा टूट गया। यवनिका पात हो गया। विश्व के रंगमंच का प्रमुख अभिनेता अपना अंतिम अभिनय दिखाकर अन्तर्ध्यान हो गया।

महर्षि वाल्मीकि ने रामायण में भगवान राम के सम्बंध में कहा है कि वे असंभवों के समन्वय थे। पंडितजी के जीवन में महाकवि के उसी कथन की एक झलक दिखाई देती है। वह शांति के पुजारी, किन्तु क्रान्ति के अग्रदूत थे; वे अहिंसा के उपासक थे, किन्तु स्वाधीनता और सम्मान की रक्षा के लिए हर हथियार से लड़ने के हिमायती थे।

वे व्यक्तिगत स्वाधीनता के समर्थक थे किन्तु आर्थिक समानता लाने के लिए प्रतिबद्ध थे। उन्होंने समझौता करने में किसी से भय नहीं खाया, किन्तु किसी से भयभीत होकर समझौता नहीं किया। पाकिस्तान और चीन के प्रति उनकी नीति इसी अद्भुत सम्मिश्रण की प्रतीक थी। उसमें उदारता भी थी, दृढ़ता भी थी। यह दुर्भाग्य है कि इस उदारता को दुर्बलता समझा गया, जबकि कुछ लोगों ने उनकी दृढ़ता को हठवादिता समझा।

मुझे याद है, चीनी आक्रमण के दिनों में जब हमारे पश्चिमी मित्र इस बात का प्रयत्न कर रहे थे कि हम कश्मीर के प्रश्न पर पाकिस्तान से कोई समझौता कर लें तब एक दिन मैंने उन्हें बड़ा क्रुद्ध पाया। जब उनसे कहा गया कि कश्मीर के प्रश्न पर समझौता नहीं होगा तो हमें दो मोर्चों पर लड़ना पड़ेगा तो बिगड़ गए और कहने लगे कि अगर आवश्यकता पड़ेगी तो हम दोनों मोर्चों पर लड़ेंगे। किसी दबाव में आकर वे बातचीत करने के खिलाफ थे।

महोदय, जिस स्वतंत्रता के वे सेनानी और संरक्षक थे, आज वह स्वतंत्रता संकटापन्न है। सम्पूर्ण शक्ति के साथ हमें उसकी रक्षा करनी होगी। जिस राष्ट्रीय एकता और अखंडता के वे उन्नायक थे, आज वह भी विपदग्रस्त है। हर मूल्य चुका कर हमें उसे कायम रखना होगा। जिस भारतीय लोकतंत्र की उन्होंने स्थापना की, उसे सफल बनाया, आज उसके भविष्य के प्रति भी आशंकाएं प्रकट की जा रही हैं। हमें अपनी एकता से, अनुशासन से, आत्म-विश्वास से इस लोकतंत्र को सफल करके दिखाना है। नेता चला गया, अनुयायी रह गए। सूर्य अस्त हो गया, तारों की छाया में हमें अपना मार्ग ढूँढना है।

यह एक महान परीक्षा का काल है। यदि हम सब अपने को समर्पित कर सकें एक ऐसे महान उद्देश्य के लिए जिसके अन्तर्गत भारत सशक्त हो, समर्थ और समृद्ध हो और स्वाभिमान के साथ विश्व शांति की चिरस्थापना में अपना योग दे सके तो हम उनके प्रति सच्ची श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित करने में सफल होंगे। संसद में उनका अभाव कभी नहीं भरेगा। शायद तीन मूर्ति को उन जैसा व्यक्ति कभी भी अपने अस्तित्व से सार्थक नहीं करेगा। वह व्यक्तित्व, वह ज़िंदादिली, विरोधी को भी साथ ले कर चलने की वह भावना, वह सज्जनता, वह महानता शायद निकट भविष्य में देखने को नहीं मिलेगी। मतभेद होते हुए भी उनके महान आदर्शों के प्रति, उनकी प्रामाणिकता के प्रति, उनकी देशभक्ति के प्रति, और उनके अटूट साहस के प्रति हमारे हृदय में आदर के अतिरिक्त और कुछ नहीं है।

इन्हीं शब्दों के साथ मैं उस महान आत्मा के प्रति अपनी विनम्र श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित करता हूँ।
