बहुत मुश्किल है दुनिया का सँवरना

तेरी   ज़ुल्फ़ों का पेच-ओ-ख़म नहीं है

Bahot mushkil hai duniya ka sanwarna,

teri zulfon ka pech-o-kham nahin hai

(It is very difficult to transform the world; it is not as simple as untangling the curls of your hair.)

I wish someone had told the great poet that it is not easy to untangle long, curly and silky hair. Imagine humidity at its peak, a young girl is trying to untangle freshly washed hair. She is getting late for the office, and her beloved tries to humour her by reciting this beautiful ‘sher’.

इतना भी आसान नहीं है ज़ुल्फ़ों का संवारना । माशूक़ के घुटनों तक लम्बे घने बाल हों, सर धोने के बाद बालों को सुलझाना हो, दफ्तर को देर हो रही हो। ऐसे में कोई इन शब्दों में अपने प्यार का इज़हार करे। माशूक़ की प्रतिक्रिया का अंदाज़ा लगाइये, इश्क़ से भी दिल-फ़रेब हैं ग़म रोज़गार के ।

 जब यार ने उठा कर ज़ुल्फ़ों के बाल बाँधे
तब मैं ने अपने दिल में लाखों ख़याल बाँधे
