Esteemed vocalist Padma Shri Shubha Mudgal’s performance at the Manglotsav on 7 May at Kamani Auditorium was far more than a musical evening. It was a heartfelt tribute steeped in reverence and memory. Organised to mark the 97th birth centenary of her revered Guru Ma, Girija Devi, the concert celebrated not only an extraordinary artist, but also the enduring legacy of the Banaras gharana.
Every note felt like a tender conversation between guru and disciple. Through her performance, Shubha Mudgal paid homage to Girija Devi’s immense contribution to Hindustani classical music, reminding the audience that great artists never truly depart. They continue to live on through the traditions they nurture, the disciples they inspire, and the music they leave behind.
The accompanying artistes, especially Aneesh Pradhan on tabla, added remarkable depth to the evening, enriching the performance with a sensitivity that beautifully complemented the spirit and emotion of the occasion.
